I was touched by the beauty of dancing. I think I will always paint dancers. I was inspired by my grandmother who is a great dancer but who, with her old age, speaks only of these memories of past dance lessons in Africa. The colours are warm because the scene is happening in Africa but to give a narrative sense to the story, I put a garment that was not acceptable in the African culture of the 50s. The tree represents the harmonious relationship that our African ancestors had with nature, this nature with which we must live, share the environment with but also this nature that feeds us in food and air. The tree is black, and it releases a warm and vibrant energy.
