I am inspired by people’s life. This painting highlights a woman’s internal and external distress. She wants to get married, but no man is handsome, rich and cultivate enough for her! So, she finds herself choosing the wrong one and her life is a failure because she is not lucky! Luck and opportunities are created by oneself. I am also inspired by these young Catholics who seek the perfect man when they are not perfect themselves but human beings. They are looking for Saint Joseph when they are not Saint Mary (Our Lady) themselves. So, in the end, they are convinced that it is God who wants them to be single for life. And to make life pleasant, they attend the wedding of all these men they rejected. Wake up because you are lying to yourself and it is a sin.
Here is the story of a little girl who had the gift of the absolute ear, a little girl who will make of her wound’s springs and defects of arms. This is the story of a young girl who invented her own discipline and measure, which was often excessive. I am a big fan of Nina Simone.
This work is a shout of anger against the selfishness of people who think that they are better than the rest but contrary they are full of judgment. Those people who think that God has spoken to them but are torturing the world in which they live with their lies. The search for the impossible, lies and hypocrisy are worse than anything. This world where materials are more important than a human being. I was inspired by the lack of risk taking. There is an appalling platitude.
I was touched by the beauty of dancing. I think I will always paint dancers. I was inspired by my grandmother who is a great dancer but who, with her old age, speaks only of these memories of past dance lessons in Africa. The colours are warm because the scene is happening in Africa but to give a narrative sense to the story, I put a garment that was not acceptable in the African culture of the 50s. The tree represents the harmonious relationship that our African ancestors had with nature, this nature with which we must live, share the environment with but also this nature that feeds us in food and air. The tree is black, and it releases a warm and vibrant energy.
I was inspired by the desire to have a child while living in a society where everything is so materialized. A society where getting old becomes a problem, we are obsessed with the aspect of thing. A baby? It is not a baby…it is an IT! Why abort when a child is so beautiful, a gift from God. We go to war to save oppressed people, but we are killing our own children without pain. Those children who did not have a choice and those women who were not told the truth. It is anger against the irresponsibility of one and the other. This artwork is inspired by children killed every year, these African women to whom pills are freely given by non-governmental charities with the wrong message of help. We say no as we don’t understand the determination. I used this platform as an artist to raise awareness of the wrongness done to the people of Africa.
I’ve seen that nowadays technology has overtaken life, and cartoons are not as naive and innocent as before. I was inspired by my childhood friend Mickey Mouse.
